Chapter Eighteen

Wilfred Delaney, of Solvus, the public relations management agency, contacted Daniel one evening to arrange to have breakfast with him on the following morning at a particular restaurant. Delaney wanted to make certain that Daniel was aware of the extent of the promotion being afforded to him despite that no fees or charges were to be paid. On his arrival, Delaney found Daniel sitting at a table in the corner and went over to him, placing his executive briefcase carefully down beside him.

‘It’s going pretty well so far,’ stated the public relations man boastfully.’ We’ve marketed the main cities... Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and London. Posters of you have been places at strategic points in all cities including downtown areas and they’re... ’

‘Downtown areas?’ challenged Daniel interrupting the man.’ Why place them there?’

Delaney stared at him blankly for a moment before replying.’ Because that’s where the poor live. They make up the bulk of the population on the socio-economic scale. There’s a lot more poor people than rich, you know. They’re looking for any change which will benefit them. We know our business well.’

He paused again and Daniel urged him to continue.’ Go on,’ he pressed, wishing to know more.

‘I don’t know whether you’ve seen the posters but they depict a large photograph of you together with a message concerning your claim to the throne and your policies when you achieve that aim. It’s very brief of course. People won’t stand still for any length of time so we have to be brief. We’ve also printed leaflets which have been distributed to libraries, employment exchanges, hospitals, clubs and other places where people gather or meet.’

‘You’ve done a lot of work on my behalf,’ ventured Daniel gratefully.’ I appreciate it but isn’t the cost beginning to spiral?’

‘Don’t worry about that,’ laughed Delaney easily.’ What we need now is to press home our advantage.’

‘How can we do that?’

‘Simple,’ rattled the fat man nonchalantly.’ Firstly, I want you to do a radio talk-in every morning from ten o’clock until eleven on City Radio. It has quite a following and the radio network has agreed to allow you to answer questions from the public on the programme.’

‘No problem,’ confirmed Daniel with interest.’ Just answer questions? Nothing more?’

‘Just to answer questions. You start tomorrow. Is that okay? Daniel nodded and Delaney continued like a steam train rolling along a track.’ Secondly, I’m trying to get a slot on television. Not HOT SHOT, the programme you were on before. That’s gross... full of wild sensationalism. This one’s on another channel but it has to be cleared first with the directors. Are you willing to go on television again?’

‘Anything that increases my exposure to the public is welcome.’

‘Good,’ responded the fat man. That’s what I like to hear... a willing client. You ought to hear what some of them are like. Take starlet celebrities.’ He paused to reconsider what he intended to say.’ No... I’d better not go there! There’s just one thing.’ He leaned down to open his executive briefcase and removed a document.
